Using International Lobbying Firms Successfully

By Ruthie Livingston

When facing government allies or foes, politicians often need help. They turn to various international lobbying firms, or just domestic ones, to assist in pleading their causes. They have a variety of top-notch companies with reputations in various fields. They need to select one with experience in their area of interest first and foremost.

The right lobbyists can make or break a good program depending upon their degree of influence they have. This influence corresponds to that of the original politician initiating the action and serves to expand and enhance it. Thus the individual and the lobbyist are a vital team. Those in higher ranks (longer term in office) are usually the most successful in achieving goals. Projects fall within certain jurisdictions in terms of political party or geographical location. Lobbyists must know the ropes to perform well.

Every politician has his or her rank within the general file. It depends on length of time in office. But personal influence may not always be enough, especially when it comes to public opinion. Lobbyists help them achieve a particular goal such as funding for a dam in their state or a new health program. Anything and everything can come under their purview.

The success of lobbyists depends on the specific issue. It can be domestic or international in scope. You want to get more officials on your side in any case. They are a center of influence as they approach the right people in the right places. They know how to get things done. Many government projects would not succeed without the right lobbyists. Thus credit must be given where due.

Lobbying firms are chosen based on need. If issues extend beyond the country, an international company is desirable. If not, a smaller domestic firm might suffice. You must inquire and get referrals to be sure of who you are hiring. Success is often correlated with the background and experience of a lobbyist. When it comes to government legislation, there is no better route. It is almost expected. Many non-profits have used the practice with good results as well. They have programs to support and they cannot achieve funding on their own.

It pays to look at background, experience, length of time in operation, and reputation. They all go hand in hand in assessing the quality and reliability of a lobbying firm. You can't know success in advance as much as you would like to have a crystal ball, but you can make an informed decision. Let's face it: track record says it all.

It is difficult to anticipate results and you must rely on a combination of instincts and good judgment. There is no replacement for the right skills. Results are best attained with experience, as in any field. You want to put the odds on your side.

In essence, it pays to be careful and thorough when selecting a lobbying firm, whether international or domestic. Your cause is important to you and others, and should get the attention it is due. Who you hire can make all the difference in the final outcome.
